Top Smart Home Gadgets for 2021

There are many parts to our doors, and it is the main flow of “traffic” on an everyday basis. It is also our piece of security. Some of us, double lock the locks and add things extra to secure our security. Let’s start with doorbells.

When you think of a gadgety doorbell, you may think of funny songs that play at the push of the button. But these days, there are some really techy bells to enhance the security of your front door.

Nest Hello

In my research, the most mentioned doorbell was the Nest Hello. The Nest Hello is like having a personal door security guard. While it is hardwired, it can store up to 3 hours of video clips. It also works on facial recognition based on frequent visitors.

Once the Nest Hello learns the faces, the people, and once you program who is what, the Nest Hello will tell you who is at your door. There is an option to subscribe and get more video recording time to your Nest Hello if needed.

Arlo Video Doorbell

The Arlo Video Doorbell includes HD live streaming with motion alerts and night vision. If anything alerts the doorbell it will trigger your phone to where you are able to see and communicate with the two-way audio with whoever is there.

This does not need a base station and hooks to your WiFi network.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro

Although hard wired, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro also serves the same purpose as those mentioned above with two-way communications through your smartphone. It sends alerts and you can monitor at any time and anywhere.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro can be voice-controlled by combining with a screen Alexa device or with the Alexa app on your smartphone.

We all want to feel safe, and sometimes our door locks are not enough security for us anymore. So we have come across a couple of smart lock systems that may help keep you feeling secure.

August Smart Lock Pro

The August Smart Lock Pro is built to fit with your existing lock. It is controlled through WiFi and Bluetooth allowing security in knowing your door is locked.

It is available to be linked up with your smartphone where you can check in to make sure it is locked, it can lock and unlock when you are in the vicinity and you can allow people in your home when you are not home.

Schlage Connect Touchscreen Deadbolt

The Schlage Connect Touchscreen Deadbolt is built to be keyless (don’t worry, they still provide you a key). You can enter your home with a simple four-digit code.

You can also give a code to your family members and temporary codes to visitors. You can keep connected and monitor your home on your devices from anywhere.

While we may have the joys of having convenience on our doors now, we need to make sure that our security is up to par as well. Below are the best smart security systems.

Note that the Arlo Brand was mentioned multiple times in research. It is a brand that has built from the ground up. According to CNET, once you get past the initial investment, the returns are absolutely amazing.

I personally have the Cloud Cam and love it!

Amazon Cloud Cam Security

The Amazon Cloud Cam Security connects through the compatible Cloud Cam App where you can view everything that the camera detects. You can customize your alerts through the app as well.

You can communicate through two- way audio and you can also link your live feed in other apps such as Amazon Fire TV, Echo Spot, and several others.

In fact, it is this communication feature that I use the most on my Cloud Cam. When my kids get home from school, I can easily see what they are up to and talk to them or just say hello much more quickly than calling them on the phone.

Arlo Pro 2

The Arlo Pro 2 is designed for inside and outside use. It is a wireless home security camera system with two cameras and rechargeable batteries It also had motion detection along with being able to be controlled from anywhere you are. You can keep a full eye on your home anywhere, anytime.

Arlo Pro 3

The Arlo Pro 3 is a step up from the Arlo Pro 2, it is wire-free and weather-resistant. It has color night vision along with an integrated spotlight and image sensor. It can be controlled through the Arlo App if you do not use Alexa.

The SimpliSafe Home Security System is an entire system put together to provide security throughout your entire home.

This system includes door sensors, window sensors, and motion detectors for all rooms in your house. This system will be able to call, text, and email you, a representative, or the police.

I purchased the SimpliSafe alarm for a house I was selling that was in a remote area with no internet. Because it communicates through the cellular network, it worked perfectly.

At my new house, I upgraded to the newer version with the smaller contacts. What I love is that even though the SimpliSafe sensors aren’t technically advertised as being weatherproof, we’ve had them on our three external gates for over a year now with no issues.

Living Room

The majority of us spend most of our time in the living room. Whether we are watching television, entertaining guests, or just relaxing.

Central Station

We are aware that you may have a lot of smart devices. Make sure they all connect with the primary “form” you would like to go with such as being able to connect with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri.

Tips for Making Your Home a Smart Home

Get to know your home. Know where the dead spots are. Know how your LAN lines and wireless routers are set. Check your wiring in your home and watch out for any switches that may not have a neutral wire which is needed for most smart switches.

Controlling smart home with a digital tablet

While you are working on this, make sure to map everything out so that you do not get confused or double name an action or place.

If you live alone, that is great, you can do what you want; but if you do not, make sure it is okay with other family members. Not everyone wants to use smart devices and it can cause unnecessary friction between members.

Save yourself from that and address and ask prior to trying to switch everything over.

Put you and your privacy first. Do your research and only purchase products from the brands you trust. Take note that most reputable companies will require cloud service for your protection.
